It is vital that you know the risks before making such an important decision.

As you gradually get older, testosterone therapy may present itself the ultimate anti-aging formula.

It is important to note that the health benefits of testosterone therapy are not yet clear as you might think.

Testosterone is a male hormone that is mainly produced in the testicles.  Testosterone helps to maintain a man’s:

  • Bone density
  • Fat distribution
  • Muscle mass and strength
  • Production of red blood-cells
  • Sperm production
  • Sex drive

Typical hindrances to the production of testosterone include hypogonadism which is a disease which stops the body from producing the normal amounts of testosterone due to testicular problems or pituitary gland problems (that control the testicles).

Testosterone therapy can often improve the symptoms of low testosterone in men.

Doctors prescribe testosterone in the form of injections, pellets or gels.

The testosterone in your body peaks during the adolescence and early adulthood years.

The older you get your testosterone levels begin to decline.  In older men, it important to try and establish if the low testosterone is due to simply age-related decline or is it due to a disease like hypogonadism.

A common question that a lot of men ask is: does (naturally) declining testosterone cause the signs of aging?

The simple answer to this is…not necessarily.  Although, it is common for men to experience many symptoms as they grow older, and some of these may indeed occur as a result of depleting testosterone levels including:

  • Changes to the sexual function – this may involve lower sexual desire and fewer spontaneous erections
  • Changes to sleep patterns – low testosterone can cause insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • Physical changes – changes may occur such as increasing body fat, reduced muscle strength (and bulk) and less bone density.  It is also possible to suffer from swollen or tender breasts and even hair loss.  Other unusual signs can be experiencing hot flushes and having less energy.
  • Emotional Changes – Low testosterone will also affect your motivation and self-confidence.  You may feel depressed and have trouble concentrating and remembering things.

Despite all of the above, it is important to remember that a lot of these signs are a normal part of growing older.

Some can be caused by other underlying factors such as the use of certain medicines, thyroid problems accompanied by depression and alcohol abuse.

The most accurate way to diagnose low testosterone levels is by undergoing a blood test.

So…is Testosterone Therapy the Key?

There is no doubt that testosterone therapy can help to reverse the effects of hypogonadism, but it MUST be stressed that it is unclear if testosterone therapy would benefit older men who are generally unhealthy.

Does Testosterone Therapy Involve Risks for Normal Aging?

Testosterone Boosters

Testosterone therapy DOES involve various risks including:

  • Sleep Apnea – a very serious sleeping disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts
  • Too many red blood cells – can be created which can increase the risk of heart disease
  • Cause acne and other skin conditions
  • The stimulation of prostrate growth
  • Enlarged breasts
  • Limited sperm production and testicular shrinkage

Speak to Your Doctor

what causes low testosterone

We advise that you speak to your doctor if you are considering testosterone therapy.

This way you will be clear about all the risks and benefits involved with the procedure.

“Our opinion is that treating normal age related testosterone deficiency with testosterone therapy is not currently advisable”

A medical condition that leads to an unusual drop in testosterone levels can normally be fixed by taking a supplemental testosterone booster.

I had no idea that testosterone was involved in bone density. It makes sense that so many people are getting testosterone therapy and improving their hormonal output. Do you know how long it takes for a treatment like this to be over? I want to make sure I understand all I can about it before I make a choice.
